Anna Hazare Agains Corruption

He once contemplated suicide and even wrote a two-page essay on why he wanted to end his life. Anna Hazare was not driven to such a pass by circumstances. He wanted to live no more because he was frustrated with life and wanted an answer to the purpose of human existence.

The story goes that one day at the New Delhi Railway Station, he chanced upon a book on Swami Vivekananda. Drawn by Vivekananda's photograph, he is quoted as saying that he read the book and found his answer - that the motive of his life lay in service to his fellow humans.

Today, Anna Hazare is the face of India's fight against corruption. He has taken that fight to the corridors of power and challenged the government at the highest level. People, the common man and well-known personalities alike, are supporting him in the hundreds swelling to the thousands.

For Anna Hazare, it is another battle. And he has fought quite a few, Including some as a soldier for 15 years in Indian Army. He enlisted after the 1962 Indo-China war when the government exhorted young men to join the Army.

In 1978, he took voluntary retirement from the 9th Maratha Battalion and returned home to Ralegaon Siddhi, a village in Maharashtra's drought-prone Ahmadnagar. He was 39 years old.

He found farmers back home struggling for survival and their suffering would prompt him to pioneer rainwater conservation that put his little hamlet on the international map as a model village.

The villagers revere him. Thakaram Raut, a school teacher in Ralegaon Siddhi says, "Thanks to Anna's agitations, we got a school, we got electricity, we got development schemes for farmers.''

Anna Hazare's fight against corruption began here. He fought first against corruption that was blocking growth in rural India. His organization - the Bhrashtachar Virodhi Jan Andolan (People's movement against Corruption). His tool of protest - hunger strikes. And his prime target - politicians.

Maharashtra stalwarts like Sharad Pawar and Bal Thackeray have often called his style of agitation nothing short of "blackmail".

But his weapon is potent. In 1995-96, he forced the Sena-BJP government in Maharashtra to drop two corrupt Cabinet Ministers. In 2003, he forced the Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) state government to set up an investigation against four ministers. In April this year, four days of fasting brought thousands of people out in support of his crusade against corruption. They also made the government realise it could not be dismissive about Anna Hazare and his mass appeal.

His relationship with the UPA government continues to be uneasy. The truce of April was short-lived. An exercise to set up a joint committee made up of equal numbers of government representatives and civil society activists, including Anna Hazare came to naught when the two sides failed to agree and drafted two different Lok Pal Bills. The government has brought its version in Parliament and Team Anna is livid.

The Gandhian is soldiering on. From one battle to another in his war against corruption. He fought from the front to have Right to Information (RTI) implemented. He is now fighting for the implementation of the Jan Lokpal Bill, the anti-corruption bill drafted by his team of crusaders.

This year, more than 30 years after Anna Hazare started his crusade, as the 74-year-old plans a second hunger strike in Delhi against large-scale corruption at the national level. Nothing really has changed except the scale of his battle.

Anna Hazare Agains Corruption

Very few social activists have captured the attention of Indians across the globe as Anna Hazare did during his "fast unto death" over the issue of the Lokpal Bill in New Delhi in April 2011. (Agains Corruption)

Hazare, a Gandhian by belief, outlook and practice, has become the face of India's fight against corruption. During his fast over the Lokpal Bill, Hazare, a quintessential traditional Indian by looks and mannerism, managed to inspire and mobilize the support of even the ultra-modern Indians - Indians for whom the word "social" only means having a profile on social networking sites.

The "Anna Hazare fast" can be described as the first real "social networking movement" in India. Hazare, a former Army man, began his social activism from Ralegan Siddhi, a village in Ahmednagar district in Maharashtra, where he successfully led a movement against alcoholism and made Ralegan Siddhi a "model village".

From a soldier to a social reformer, and a right to information crusader, Anna Hazare's journey of four decades has been unprecedented in terms of a non-violent yet effective campaign of resurrecting a barren village into an 'ideal village' model and empowering the faceless citizen through pioneering work on Right to Information. His efforts to empower grampanchayats, protect efficient government officers from frequent transfers and fight against the red tapism in government offices have also received accolades.

Hazare's campaign was instrumental in the implementation of the Right to Information Act in Maharashtra, which is considered one of the best RTI Acts in India.

A Ramon Magsaysay award winner, Anna Hazare, like his idol, Mahatma Gandhi, has triggered a debate over the use of fast as a means of protest in India. By sheer commitment and simplicity, he has demonstrated that Gandhian principles are relevant even in the 21st-century India.

India: petrol price protests ,Delhi road blockades

The demonstrations, organised by the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) party, have caused massive traffic jams in the city.

They want the government to reverse the price hikes.

At midnight on Saturday, state-run oil firms raised petrol prices by 5 rupees a litre - the steepest ever single increase in petrol prices.

This is the seventh hike in 11 months and analysts say it will worsen inflation.

Last June, the government allowed state-run oil firms to fix the price of petrol but it continues to control the prices of diesel, kerosene and cooking gas to protect the poor and try to keep a check on inflation.

Effects of Radiation

Know radiation background in the Russian Far East on Sunday was within normal limits, said the regional Emergencies Ministry center that monitors radiation levels following a number of recent explosions at Japan's Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant.
The Fukushima plant was hit by a number of explosions following a 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami that killed thousands on March 11.
Efforts are still underway to try to cool down the overheating nuclear cores in the reactors in a bid to prevent nuclear fallout.
Trace amounts of radioactive iodine were discovered in tap water in Tokyo in the wake of the disaster at the crippled nuclear plant.
The Japanese government has halted sale of food products from the area of Fukushima, the International Atomic Energy Agency said as the presence of radioactive iodine contamination in food products from near the Fukushima plant was confirmed.

STATUS OF NUCLEAR POWER PLANT

IN Japan battle to cool reactors at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, conditions which an International Atomic Energy Agency official said Friday were “moving to a stable, non-changing situation, which is positive.”
Over the weekend, workers are expected to keep trying to use helicopters and fire trucks to deliver water to the site, in the hope of cooling overheating fuel. They will also try to attach power lines to the reactors in order to restart water pumps.
If successful, those steps could forestall the nuclear fuel from overheating and then releasing radiation.
Japan’s fire department will resume operations to pour water into pools storing spent fuel rods from 0430 GMT, Kyodo news service reported.
Japan’s nuclear safety agency said it expects to restore power to reactors No. 1 and 2 Saturday, and to reactors No. 3 and 4 on Sunday.
This is even as the country continues to be hit by aftershocks Saturday, more than one week after the massive magnitude-9.0 earthquake that triggered a devastating tsunami.
RADIATION REACHES U.S.
U.S. officials detected the presence of a radioactive isotope in California on Friday that appeared to come from the Fukushima nuclear-power plant in Japan, but the levels they detected were minuscule. They say the levels are consistent with their expectations and pose no risk to human health.
ACCIDENT RATING RAISED
Japan’s nuclear safety agency Friday raised the rating of the nuclear accident at the Fukushima plant to level five from four after considering the suspected extent of damage to fuel at the plant’s reactors.
EVACUATION AREA
People living within a radius of 20 kilometers of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant have been evacuated; those between 20 kilometers and 30 kilometers of the plant were told to stay indoors.
CASUALTIES
Japanese police said as of 1400 GMT Friday 6,911 people were killed and 10,692 missing.
INTERVENTION TO WEAKEN THE YEN
The yen fell more than 3% against the dollar at one point Friday on a rare concerted intervention by the central banks of the Group of Seven industrial powers to counter the Japanese currency’s recent jump. The precise scope of the intervention isn’t known, but traders estimated the yen selling was in the neighborhood of $20 billion. Late Friday in New York, the dollar was trading at Y80.76, compared with around Y79 when the Bank of Japan kicked off the intervention early Friday.

Japan is witnessing the most troubled times since the second world war, all the Japanese auto makers forced to delay their plans in India, stride to minimize the calamity's impact on their India operations.

Earlier Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) had passed on the sales figure of 1 crore units without any celebrations. “This is a big tragedy on mankind. That is why we are not doing anything on our one crore production mark. We have cancelled everything, this time is not to celebrate,'' MSIL Chairman R. C. Bhargava said.

Then came the news from Toyota about first delaying the launch of their first hatch here and then rises speculations of delay in the facility in Bangalore where Toyota invested Rs. 3200 crore in December last year.

Now Honda announces latency in launching their latest budget hatch Brio here in India. “In light of the recent devastating earthquake that hit Japan, causing massive damage to life and property, Honda Siel Cars India has postponed the Honda Brio India preview event scheduled to be held on March 17,” the company said in a statement.

Nuclear power plant can make life horribal

19:30 time was March 15: Conditions at a crippled nuclear power plant deteriorated further Tuesday, with a Japanese nuclear safety official saying that the water inside the waste fuel storage pool for a damaged reactor may be boiling. Hidehiko Nishiyama told reporters that "we cannot deny the possibility of water boiling" in the spent fuel storage pool at the facility. If the water boils, it could evaporate, exposing the rods. The fuel rods are encased in safety containers meant to prevent them from resuming nuclear reactions, nuclear officials said, downplaying the risk of that happening. But they acknowledged that there could have been damage to the containers. They also confirmed that the walls of the storage pool building were damaged.

Japan quake, tsunami kill 10,000; economy at risk

FUKUSHIMA: Japan scrambled to avert a meltdown at a stricken nuclear reactor on Monday after a second hydrogen explosion rocked the facility, just days after a devastating earthquake and tsunami that killed at least 10,000 people. Roads and rail, power and ports have been crippled across much of Japan's northeast and estimates of the cost of the multiple disasters have leapt to as much as $170 billion. Analysts said the economy could even tip back into recession.

Japanese stocks closed down more than 6 percent, the biggest fall since the height of the global financial crisis in 2008.
